  • Old steering gear worm and housing - Not re used
  • See the lip worn into the cam follower, where the tapered end has worn down? This is why you can't "adjust" a sloppy Ross steering gear - the initial cam follower adjustment must not be changed or you will damage the gear. Advancing the cam follower into the worm with wear like this will jam the sharp lip and suddenly increased cross section into the edge of the worm and destroy it.

  • That cam follower had lost a lot of metal. This was one of three areas of excess wear in the gear.
  • This spherical OD, set screw type bearing was junk and had a lot of radial play in it, which added to the already large amount of slop in the steering. I found this was a standard 52mm OD, 1" bore bearing commonly used in industrial applications.

  • The Gravely steering gear I removed had this threaded end sheared off by a previous owner, which would have made reinstalling a steering wheel impossible. Rust was all that was holding the old steering wheel on - the splines are not a tapered fit (11/16" straight spline, 40 tooth count, on this)
